TCarta Marine to Unveil Bathymetric Data Portal at Ocean Business 2017

TCarta Marine, a global provider of marine geospatial products, has announced the launch of Bathymetrics, an online portal offering instant access to satellite-derived bathymetric data sets. TCarta Marine will unveil the Bathymetrics portal and initial 2-metre data sets at the upcoming Ocean Business 17 Conference in Southampton, England.

“The Bathymetrics portal will enable customers to search for coastal zone bathymetric data, pay by the square kilometre for just the data they need, and download it immediately into their digital mapping software,” said TCarta Marine CEO David Critchley. “The accessibility and affordability of the portal data will appeal to marine mapping customers at all levels.”

TCarta Marine and its business partners, DHI and DigitalGlobe, Inc. (NYSE: DGI), will demonstrate the Bathymetrics prototype on Stand W4 at Ocean Business 17 being held April 4-6, 2017. On Thursday, April 6 at 1:30 pm in Node Room 1, the partners will host a workshop where beta users will discuss applications of the portal and 2-metre data sets in marine projects.

The 2-metre Satellite Derived Bathymetry data set will be the first of several global marine datasets. It is an off-the-shelf version of a custom product introduced in 2011 by Proteus Geo, which merged with TCarta Marine this year. Accurate seafloor depths are extracted by DHI using a primary production technique, before TCarta Marine ensure that all data undergoes a rigorous quality control procedure. All depths are derived from 8-band multispectral imagery captured by DigitalGlobe’s high-resolution WorldView satellites, the world’s most advanced commercial imaging constellation.

“This process derives bathymetric measurements at two-metre resolution to an average depth of 20 metres in the near-shore coastal zone, where environmental conditions allow,” said Critchley. “Satellite-derived data is far more cost effective than airborne and ship-borne methods, and it’s available in regions that might not be accessible due to safety, environmental or political concerns.”

The custom satellite-derived bathymetric data has been extremely popular among government organisations, energy exploration & production companies and marine engineering firms. The unique value price points and small-area purchases made possible by the Bathymetrics portal are expected to expand the base of 2-metre customers to include organisations and companies working on smaller scale marine projects.

With support from the European Space Agency, TCarta Marine and DHI are building the global database of the 2-metre product for on-demand delivery. Production has commenced in the Arabian Gulf. The Red Sea will be completed by the end of 2017 with an ongoing phased expansion to both fresh and salt-water coastlines worldwide. The commercial Bathymetrics portal will be operational this summer. Until then, 2-metre products may be ordered through info@tcartamarine.com.
