Dense Image Matching for Easy 3D Modelling

New Threat and Opportunity for Professional Surveyors
Normally when something is too good to be true, it is not true. But in the case of dense image matching (DIM), professional surveyors should look twice – because their clients, and certainly those in the construction, infrastructure and 3D city mapping markets, certainly will. 'GIM International' asked John Taylor, who is responsible at Bentley Systems for reality modelling in Asia Pacific and in the global defence market, for his insights into DIM. Dense image matching (DIM) did not arrive like a bolt from the blue. It has been around in the photogrammetric world for the past two decades but, through further... (read more)

FARO Introduces As-Built Software Platform for 3D Digital Modelling

FARO has announced the availability of their as-built software platform that enables efficient and cost-effective transfer of 3D reality capture into Autodesk design tools to create ready to use CAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM) deliverables. As-built is specifically designed to minimize the effort and time required to create as-built documentation, which is the main task across AEC professionals in the building, facility and infrastructure design phases. This comprehensive and innovative platform seamlessly integrates processed 3D data coming from the FARO SCENE software platform and can support point cloud modelling for the latest 2019 Autodesk design tools. The FARO as-built... (read more)

Urban Energy Modelling - Semantic 3D City Data as Virtual and Augmented Reality

The visualisation of results from urban energy modelling and simulation is a crucial part of energy research as it is the main communication tool among scientists, engineers and decision-makers. Energy modelling and simulation results are directly linked to spatial objects, and 3D therefore becomes a necessity. The multiple interactive 3D visualisation environments that exist are mainly targeted as 3D viewers for use on desktop machines and lack immersive components that enable users to truly immerse themselves, explore and interact with the real environment onsite. In this study, the team focused on a holistic approach that implements a seamless transition from... (read more)

3D GIS in China

Chongqing Survey Institute Realised What Many Still Dream Of
Since 1998, the Chongqing Survey Institute (CSI) has been managing the 3D geoinformation database, including terrain, buildings, underground pipelines, geology and underground buildings, of the Chinese megapolis of 30 million people. For the commercial market, CSI’s 3D Mobile group focuses on combining the indoor and outdoor environment with e-commerce systems. Meanwhile, its BIM and GIS Integration group concentrates on three fields: geological survey, construction sector and municipal administration. Chongqing is a city of unique topographical and landscape features. It is built on mountains and partially surrounded by the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, making mapping the city a big challenge for... 2D and 3D Enrichment of Panoramas

Visualisation of Topographical Features Improves Functionality
The use of panoramic images has become widespread in many governmental agencies and companies, especially in the last couple of years. It is possible to integrate 2D spatial features (e.g. building outlines, parcels, utilities etc.) with panoramic images to enable the proper visualisation of topographical features in a 3D environment. Verbree et al. (2004) have shown the advantages of augmenting underground conduit pipes and cables into panoramic images, thus allowing better visualisation of otherwise invisible features. The geometric augmentation of 2D features into panoramic images enables users to identify, query or analyse any geographically related information in a 3D environment.... (read more)

3D Mapping Cloud Supports 3D Models and Hybrid Resources

Orbit GT has released a version 19.4 of its SaaS solution 3DMapping.cloud – introducing 3D Models support and Hybrid Resources. “As 3D Mapping and BIM grow closer, we now added support for 3D Models in 3dmapping.cloud“, says Peter Bonne, CEO of Orbit GT. “Customers can now create a 3D model library, organize categories, and blend these in any 3D or image view.” The other new feature is Hybrid Resources. These resources in 3D Mapping Cloud are to be used as any other resource, however, the data is stored in a different environment, e.g. Orbit GT’s 3DM Publisher (for on-premise installations). Hybrid Resources... New FIG Publication on 3D Cadastres

Two recent publications on ‘Best Practices 3D Cadastres’ give a comprehensive overview of research, developments and implementations relating to 3D cadastres. Professor Peter van Oosterom, an authority and expert in this field, has been working in this domain for two decades. The first International Workshop on 3D was organized under his chairmanship in 2001, and the sixth edition of that workshop was held last year. Prof Van Oosterom has also chaired the FIG (International Federation of Surveyors) Working Group on 3D Cadastres – a joint Working Group of FIG Commissions 3 ‘Spatial Information Management’ and 7 ‘Cadastre and Land Management’...
