TanDEM-X 3D World Map Completed

The TanDEM-X three-dimensional map of Earth has finally been completed. Mountain peaks and valley floors across the globe can now be seen with an accuracy of just one metre. The global elevation model was created as part of the TanDEM-X satellite mission; it offers unprecedented accuracy compared with other global datasets and is based on a uniform database. The approximately 150 million square kilometres of land surface were scanned from space by radar sensors. “TanDEM-X has opened up a whole new chapter in the field of remote sensing. The use of radar technology based on two satellites orbiting in close formation is... (read more)

Building a 3D Virtual Forest

Communicating Forest Management Plans through Virtual Reality
Forest management planning is a delicate process. Environmental, economic and social aspects need to be taken into account in order to achieve sustainable development. In Quebec, before a plan can be implemented, local communities have to be consulted for their feedback and concerns. Instead of just expecting citizens to decipher complex maps, this project is aimed at sharing a realistic view of the potential changes through a 3D virtual experience. This application is based on GIS data that consists of a shapefile with information derived from a Lidar survey, as well as a digital elevation model. In the province of... (read more)

HoloLive3D AR App Visualizes 3D BIM on the Job Site

Along with their plugin to push BIM models from Revit directly to HoloLens, software developer VisuaLive3D has released HoloLive3D, an application that loads BIM, places them in the real world in true 1:1 scale, and allows users to perform BIM coordination, QA/QC, field validation and clash detection, even without any internet connection. The application provides additional features such as Scale, to scale the models up/down for office presentations; and Measure, which works as a virtual measuring tape to gather data on existing conditions or compare model content to find deviations between the design and the as-built. VisuaLive3D’s plugin can be used to... (read more)

The Expanding Field of 3D City Model Applications

The application space of 3D city models has expanded hand in hand with technical advancements. In addition to the ‘traditional’ use cases in urban planning and zoning, 3D city models are expected to facilitate energy analysis, detailed architectural visualisation, interactive and immersive applications development, and participatory GIS. All this places challenging requirements on 3D city model platforms. The discussion about 3D city models is further complicated by the amount of different platforms used for 3D city model applications. In addition to the professional GIS/CAD tools, 3D city models are used on game engines and various web-based 3D viewers, such as... (read more)

Unique 3D Habitat Map of the Great Barrier Reef

International aquatic remote sensing company EOMAP recently showcased its unique contribution to the world's first 3D habitat map of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) at the International Forum on Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB Day 2019) in Australia. The mapping project, titled ‘3D live habitats for the full extent of the Great Barrier Reef’, will for the first time provide maps of the predicted coral types and underwater landscape for the more than 3,000 reefs within the 350,000 square kilometres of the GBR. EOMAP’s cutting-edge technology provides essential data for this revolutionary project, in which the University of Queensland (UQ), Great Barrier Reef Marine Park... (read more)
