View BIM on a Tablet with MobiLive

VisualLive has released MobiLive, an app that allows you to place true scale BIM models on site coordinates, and manipulate them to visualise how it looks in the real world, or during different construction phases on an iPhone/iPad with one click on VisualLive Revit and Navisworks direct plugins, or on the web portal. VisualLive has added a Navigation mode that features three different settings: the third and first-person view; and the orbit settings. Similar to a video game, with only a difference in perspective, the third-person and first-person views allow you to navigate through the model using two on-screen joysticks. The orbit setting puts you... (read more)

Digital Asset Management with BIM App

3D Repo, a multi-award-winning provider of cloud software solutions for collaborative building information modelling (BIM), has started development on a mobile platform for Crossrail designed to manage maintainable assets. The cloud-based innovation by 3D Repo brings together previously disparate databases and information sources to provide on-site, instant access to both historical and real-time information. The project is funded under the Crossrail innovation programme, Innovate 18, which is designed to lead innovation in the construction industry.  Working with Crossrail, 3D Repo has demonstrated integration between information already held within asset lifecycle information management software. Through a Crossrail Asset Information and Configuration... (read more)

Bringing BIM Alive - Autodesk User Conference 2016

Cadline’s Autodesk user conference took place in the heart of the City of London in June. Richard Groom reports that BIM was the hot topic this year. With the deadline passed for central government contracts worth over £50 million to be using BIM level 2, this year’s conference concentrated on helping delegates to get to grips with the nuts and bolts of BIM. BIM for Newbies For early birds, there was a pre-conference session on ‘BIM leadership’, which was aimed at anyone ‘new to BIM or confused about what they should be doing next’. There were a lot of us!... (read more)

BIM-GIS - Here, There and Everywhere

Giving the annual UKGEOforum Lecture at the RICS last month, Ordnance Survey’s new director general and CEO Nigel Clifford said that rather like the late David Bowie, Ordnance Survey has constantly had to reinvent itself. Like so many of us the mapping agency has been on an endless journey since the arrival of the digital age and the Internet. As greater processing power and storage capacity has grown, so has our insatiable appetite for more data, more features, more solutions. Will consumers one day expect a 3D Britain of point clouds, available online, on demand? Perhaps, now that wi-fi is... (read more)

Queensland Mandates BIM on Large Government Projects

Queensland has announced a new policy requiring Building Information Modelling (BIM) to be used on all new government construction projects with estimated capital costs over AU$50 million. “BIM is a ‘win-win’ for designers, builders, asset managers, and all stakeholders helping us deliver the government infrastructure we all need and use,” said Cameron Dick, Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning. “It’s a collaborative and productive way of working that will help us to better design, construct, manage and operate the assets that we build. This will ultimately de-risk projects by improving their on-time and on-budget delivery, as well as... (read more)

Autodesk and Esri Partner to set BIM-GIS Integration Agenda

Esri and Autodesk have announced a collaboration that signals an aim of integrating their software portfolios and working towards enabling freer and deeper flows of data between professionals using their tools. The two software producers are seemingly targeting major infrastructure development with this move — scenarios where mass-scale spatial data modelling needs may need to inform complex structure design. “The announcement is intended to build the bridge between BIM infrastructure design tools and GIS mapping technologies, to create more sustainable and resilient design through enhanced project insight, and improve end-to-end flow of materials, resource availability and scheduling during construction. Tightly... (read more)

BIM Market to Reach US$18.8bn by 2024

The value of the global building information modelling (BIM) market has been projected to reach US$18.8 billion by 2024, up from a valuation of US$3.6 billion in 2016. The 'Global Building Information Modelling Market' report, published by Esticast research and consulting, found that emerging countries in Southeast Asia and Europe will be major drivers of this projected expansion, with rapid growth propelled by infrastructure development to support rapidly growing populations in nations such as India and China. The report divides the BIM market into application areas, defining commercial, residential, institutional, infrastructure and industrial segments. Geographically, the market is segmented into North America, Europe,... (read more)

Pointfuse Unlocks As-Built Data for BIM with Autodesk Integration

Pointfuse, a software provider that converts laser scan data - known as point clouds - into 3D models, has announced its integration with Autodesk’s BIM 360 project delivery platform, the first single project platform connecting design through construction. Pointfuse has pioneered new techniques to rapidly process vast point cloud datasets into intelligent and easy to handle mesh models. This innovation will allow important ‘as-built’ models to be easily incorporated into Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows managed with Autodesk BIM 360. “Digital Construction is about supplementing existing work flow practices in an online collaborative environment,” said Jon Boyce, CEO of Pointfuse....
