Ben Nevis Gains a Metre Thanks to GPS Height Measurement

The Ordnance Survey (OS) has re-measured the Scottish peak of Ben Nevis to find it’s a metre taller than previously thought and now stands at 1,345m. The actual difference from the last official measurement in 1949 is much less - but enough for the height to be rounded up rather than down. The change comes from the precision that can now be achieved with modern technologies such as GPS. OS, Britain's official mapping agency, has already begun issuing maps with the new height. The significance of the amendment has not been lost on the agency's geodetic consultant, Mark Greaves, who... (read more)

Over Four Thousand Students Participate in Virtual Field Trip

More young people than ever before are taking an interest in the geospatial industry; a record 4000-plus students recently took part in the LINZ-led virtual field trip. Students from more than 150 schools took a virtual trip online to the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, where they heard from geospatial experts, rangers and historians about how they are using location-based technology to support their work. The theme was to map my Waahi – Waahi means a place of historic importance. Each student chose a place important to them and learned how to visualise information about it – stories of... (read more)

Survey and GIS in San Diego

Everyone forms their own impressions of San Diego, but for surveyors and GIS folks in the Summer, it means the largest geospatial event in the world, the ESRI Survey & Engineering GIS Summit combined with the ESRI International User Conference. The 28th annual User Conference (UC) came in early August with the theme ‘Building New Opportunities’, the bulk of the Survey Summit running as prelude the previous weekend. The summit drew over four hundred attendees, a roughly 8% increase over last year. Both conferences featured a trade show. The summit also includes the Survey and Leadership Forum, actually, a Special... (read more)

Esri Releases Survey123 for ArcGIS with Spike Integration

Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, has announced the software release of Survey123 for ArcGIS mobile application with Spike, a laser measurement solution by ikeGPS. This paired technology accelerates field data capture and asset inspection activities. Spike allows users to measure hard-to-reach objects from a distance simply by taking a photo with their smartphone or tablet. Users can then capture real-time measurements from that image, including areas, elevations, distances between two points, and GPS/GNSS location. Use of the Survey123 integration with Spike will be of particular interest to organisations that routinely utilise mobile workflows for asset and facilities management, field... (read more)
