The First Seven Years of INSPIRE Implementation

The INSPIRE Directive has had a massive impact on the provision of European GI and hence on software developers and users. We now have a 94 page ‘autobiography’ of the first seven years of INSPIRE which makes fascinating reading. It complements the insiders’ view from the EU and Member State data providers with the perspectives of over 700 responses from an international consultation and an independent academic review, says Ian Masser. The ‘Midterm evaluation report on INSPIRE implementation’ (http://inspire.ec.europa.eu) is, arguably, an ‘autobiography’ written by a team of officials from the European Environment Agency and the Joint Research Centre led... Starting with two days of workshops in Kehl, Germany, on 4 September 2017, the INSPIRE conference 2017 concluded with three days of conferences and sessions in Strasbourg, France, on Friday 8 September 2017. This international setting emphasised the invitation to the delegates to look beyond the box in order to work towards implementation of the European Spatial Data Infrastructure in 2020. At least, the ‘cross-border’ aspect of the conference was highlighted during these days. That’s how ‘cross-border’ was given shape with European countries and regions working together – and building a dialogue between each other. An international community was thinking... (read more)

Land Registry and INSPIRE Index Polygons - Interview Andrew Trigg

Robin Waters talks across the waves to Andrew Trigg to discover more about latest developments with Land Registry, particularly its download service for INSPIRE Index Polygons. For over 20 years, the Land Register for England and Wales has been available for anyone to view but before 1990 it was “closed” to the public – you needed the permission of the owner of registered land in order to look at the register entries for that land and find out who owned it! And it was only in 1990 that compulsory registration, on transfer of title, reached every part of England and... (read more)

INSPIRE represents the most complex spatial data infrastructure project ever attempted, with the goal of aligning the 28 member states of the European Union (EU).
