Bluesky Lidar Data Reveals First World War Trenches

High-resolution laser scanned height models may have revealed previously unrecorded First World War practice trenches. The Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) data, captured by aerial mapping company Bluesky, was commissioned by the Coal Authority as part of their research and development programme, which is looking at alternative ways to inspect mine entries in remote and rural areas. However on closer inspection by specialists at English Heritage, patterns in the terrain revealed trenches that are thought to have been used by soldiers preparing for the battlefields of World War One. Bluesky to Capture 185,000 Hectares of Lidar Data in Ireland

Working on behalf of the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and state forestry company Coillte, Bluesky is capturing 185,000 hectares of high-resolution Lidar data in Ireland. Using aircraft-mounted lasers, the resulting 3D maps will be used to inform various protection schemes for clean drinking water and Ireland’s adoption of the EU Water Framework Directive. In addition, the Bluesky Lidar maps will be used to improve knowledge of the composition of Ireland’s state owned forests. 3D Laser Mapping Launches Campaign to Release Open Source LiDAR Data

3D Laser Mapping, leading geospatial technology specialist, is launching a campaign to give free access to LiDAR data in order to showcase the capabilities of mobile mapping systems. They will be offering open access to point cloud data which can be viewed and manipulated using GIS software. Bluesky LiDAR Maps Used to Monitor the Spread of Deadly Tree Disease

Laser maps collected by airborne mounted sensors have, for the first time, been used to successfully segment individual trees affected by the deadly Larch tree disease. The laser scanning surveys (LiDAR) were undertaken by aerial mapping company Bluesky and used to model tree canopy height models as part of a wider study to prove the effective use of the technology for disease identification and monitoring.
