Monitoring, Mapping, and Modelling Saltmarsh

The UAV Way
Coastal and estuarine saltmarsh has long been recognised as having key physical, ecological, and recreational value, acting as sediment and nutrient traps and as natural coastal protection structures functioning as protective buffers between the land and sea. Additionally, they are important areas for shelter, feeding and breeding of diverse forms of wildlife (Doody, 2007). Recent work suggests that saltmarshes are particularly good for demonstrating how the coast can change in response to environmental influences, including relative sea level rise. The pace of current Scottish relative sea level rise (Rennie and Hansom, 2011) may lead to inundation of coastal saltmarsh, with... (read more)

Bentley Systems Advances Reality Modelling

Bentley Systems, a leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, demonstrated at SPAR 3D Expo & Conference the latest ContextCapture offerings for reality modelling that increase joint opportunities in surveying and engineering. The capabilities now include cloud processing services, a mobile app, and photo planning for Bentley’s applications. ContextShare extends Bentley’s ProjectWise connected data environment to securely manage, share, and stream reality meshes, and their input sources, across project teams and applications. Navigator Web is a new web application that delivers high-performance streaming of very large reality meshes through the browser to desktop or mobile devices.  For infrastructure project delivery, reality modelling captures the actual context of... University Uses Advanced Modelling to Predict Landslides

The University of Melbourne has developed an advanced modelling tool that can predict boundaries of landslides up to a fortnight before they occur. Researchers at the School of Mathematics and Statistics built a model that can analyse surface movement at the microstructure level, able to detect the patterns that are the telltale signs of a developing collapse. One such pattern is infinitesimal motions that change over time, becoming synchronised as the risk of ‘failure’ increases. Professor Antoinette Tordesillas said “These warnings can be subtle. Identifying them requires fundamental knowledge of failure at the microstructure level – the movement of individual grains of earth.... (read more)

Topcon and Bentley Bundle Reality Modelling Software with UAS

Topcon Positioning Group has introduced Topcon ContextCapture, powered by Bentley Systems, a reality modelling software solution that will be offered with Topcon unmanned aerial systems (UASs). The system is designed for mapping, construction and surveying professionals. It enables them to quickly turn simple photographs and/or point cloud data into true-to-life, highly detailed 3D models for use throughout a project life cycle. The offering will include Topcon ContextCapture Standard and Topcon ContextCapture Advanced, said Charles Rihner, vice president of the Topcon GeoPositioning Solutions Group. The standard package will be bundled with Falcon 8 and Sirius Basic/Pro and allows operators to process data from... (read more)

Cadcorp Provides Workload Modelling Analysis for Surrey Fire & Rescue

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) are benefiting from using Cadcorp SIS Desktop and Workload Modeller for a range of GIS analyses. Cadcorp SIS is used to carry out various tasks including production of thematic maps, hotspot maps and a variety of routing calculations. Cadcorp Workload Modeller is used to analyse the impact that any resource changes have on operational performance. SFRS approached Cadcorp earlier this year to provide a third party quality assurance service on the data, methodology and results of modelling options for fire cover in Surrey. In order to complete this project, SFRS supplied Cadcorp with the... (read more)

Dense Image Matching for Easy 3D Modelling

New Threat and Opportunity for Professional Surveyors
Normally when something is too good to be true, it is not true. But in the case of dense image matching (DIM), professional surveyors should look twice – because their clients, and certainly those in the construction, infrastructure and 3D city mapping markets, certainly will. 'GIM International' asked John Taylor, who is responsible at Bentley Systems for reality modelling in Asia Pacific and in the global defence market, for his insights into DIM. Dense image matching (DIM) did not arrive like a bolt from the blue. It has been around in the photogrammetric world for the past two decades but, through further... (read more)

Gaia Engineers Acquires Maptek Spatial Modelling and Geotechnical Tools

Gaia Engineers Ltd, based in Auckland, New Zealand, has acquired Maptek I-Site Studio and Maptek Eureka for their civil engineering practice. Gaia saw the need for smart automated tools to help interpret geological and geotechnical features from large photogrammetry and laser scan point cloud datasets, which are available in I-Site Studio. Incorporating drilling data to model geology for analysis of structures and failures is streamlined in Eureka. Eureka provides an interactive 3D environment for visualisation and modelling of drilling, geophysical surveys, maps, imagery and GIS data. "The Maptek workflows played a critical part in the purchasing decision," said Technical Director... (read more)

Cadcorp Offering Workload Modelling Analysis Service to UK Fire Services

In addition to providing GIS software, support and consultancy for UK fire services to perform their own analysis, Cadcorp will now independently perform modelling on their behalf. A significant number of UK fire services are using Cadcorp Map Modeller and Workload Modeller to assist in the production of their Integrated Risk Management Plans.  Map Modeller is used to map resources and demand, and perform spatial analysis.  Examples may include thematic maps, hotspot maps and travel time analysis.  Workload Modeller builds upon this by allowing fire services to make changes to the resources available and model the impact of those changes...
