Esri Delivers Improved Operations to Navy Missions with Ocean Data System

Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, has announced that its technology will be used for the first time with US Navy unmanned vehicle systems to improve how information is gathered before ocean and near-shore operations. Sensor data from maritime remote vehicles is uploaded into a command centre where this information can be understood faster and more holistically than ever before. Esri technology knits Navy data together with structured analysis to enable better decision-making. Using Esri’s enterprise software, the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NMOC) can now analyze collected data from the ocean such as water temperature, humidity, wind speed,... (read more)

The Future of Geospatial Education

GIS Professionals need to diversify their skills and quickly learn emerging technologies, argues Patrick Rickles. The use and understanding of GIS was historically limited to specialists. Today, GIS is commonplace, as spatially-enabled apps become standard on smartphones. With over a third of the world’s total population – an estimated 2.6 billion people - owning smartphones, and a reported 5 billion requests per week to Apple Maps alone, there are a large number of non-expert users of GIS, which is only sure to grow. Do GIS Professionals Understand their Own Industry Well Enough?

As the power of locational data starts to dawn on a wider range of industries, the GIS profession needs to ensure that it understands the fast-changing world within which it operates. This very challenge, of redefining itself for the 21st century, is explored in the following article by New Zealander, Nathan Heazlewood. Thought-provoking, to say the least. Many people employed in the GIS Industry are interested in what is happening to our field; for example, trends in changing technology, usage patterns, profitability, and employment prospects. However, getting an accurate picture is problematic in such a multi-faceted industry. Setting criteria and... (read more)
