Satellite Imagery Aids Rescue Efforts for Hurricanes

The calls for assistance started days before Hurricane Harvey came barreling across America’s doorstep this summer. First responders and government officials needed answers to prepare and protect communities. Remotely sensed imagery was provided—at no cost and almost daily—through the USGS Hazard Data Distribution System (HDDS) for analysis on the extent, severity and evolution of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. How strong is this storm going to be? What kind of damage occurred on its path through the Caribbean? How might it impact southeast Texas once it makes landfall? 15,000 images were downloaded from HDDS following the three storms. Requests came... (read more)

Egyptian Space and Satellite Plans Move Ahead

With a long-awaited law finally being approved by the State Council after passing through parliament, Egypt’s Space Agency is now being formed. Egypt has been developing a new space centre with some 100 acres set aside for work on the Misr Sat 2 satellite project and another 23 acres planned for other projects. Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, showed MPs a model satellite and said its components will be built by Egyptians at the new space centre, just east of Cairo. One of the other space-focused projects includes plans to launch a satellite with China... (read more)

DigitalGlobe Releases Satellite Imagery of California Wildfires

DigitalGlobe has released satellite imagery and data of the wildfires in California through their Open Data Program. The publically released imagery is for Ventura, California, and the surrounding communities and will expand coverage based on the fire’s activity. DigitalGlobe partnered with Mapbox to update their fire tracking map with the latest imagery. This map allows users to search addresses and zoom in on specific areas in or near the fire zones, and it includes the latest fire perimeters provided by first responders on the ground. View the map here: Also available for publication are several JPEGs taken by DigitalGlobe’s... (read more)

Interactive Map Shows Fire with Address Search and Satellite Imagery

Mapbox has published a map to give people affected by the wildfires in Northern California and across the U.S. access to the most up to date information on fire perimeters in relation to specific locations and addresses. Using the best available data coming from Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination and from the agencies and first responders on the ground, this map allows anyone to search a specific address to see where it falls in relation to the fire perimeters for wildfires burning across the United States. Coupled with up to date satellite imagery from Digital Globe as part of their Open Data... (read more)

Earth-i Chooses Spacemetric to Process Footage from Prototype Satellite

Earth-i has announced that images and video from its new prototype satellite due for launch early January 2018 will be managed, catalogued and geometrically corrected using software from Swedish photogrammetry and imagery specialist, Spacemetric. Earth-i is building the first commercial constellation in the world to provide full-colour video; and the first European-owned constellation able to provide both video and still images. Footage recorded by Earth-i’s fleet of satellites will be available for analysis within minutes of acquisition. Spacemetric’s Keystone software will be installed at Earth-i’s Data Processing Centre in Guildford, UK and will perform two vital processes: Pin-pointing the precise... (read more)

High-Resolution Satellite Images of the Northern California Wildfires

Today DigitalGlobe released high-resolution satellite images of the wildfires burning in Northern California. They have killed at least 21 people, destroyed at least 3,500 structures, and burned more than 115,000 acres. The imagery has been collected on 10 and 11 October 2017. The 10 October images were collected using the Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) sensor on DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-3 satellite, which is uniquely able to pierce through the wildfire smoke to see where the fires are burning on the ground. For comparison, the ground and the fire line are completely obstructed by smoke in the natural colour image of the same area... (read more)

Satellite Images of Greece Flood Help Government Response

A flood west of Athens, Greece, was caused by heavy rain on 15 and 16 November 2017 and caused the death of 22 people. European Space Imaging captured 30cm resolution images of the area using the WorldView-4 satellite on 21 November 2017. The images clearly show the damage wrought by the torrents of water and mud, and the path the water took as it flowed down the sides of the mountains and into gullies. The cities of Mandra, Elefsina, and Nea Peramos were most affected with 1,184 buildings suffering damage requiring significant government compensation. It has been reported that inappropriate... Airbus Strengthens Imagery Capabilities with Vision-1

Airbus has enlarged its high-resolution imagery portfolio following an agreement to leverage capacity from the S1-4 satellite built by Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL). This imagery from Vision-1 delivers full end-to-end imaging operations to Airbus’ customers. Vision-1 provides 0.9m resolution imagery in the panchromatic band and 3.5m in the multispectral bands (NIR, RGB), with a 20.8km swath width. These specifications are ideal for defence, security and agriculture applications, while the extra revisit opportunity further strengthens Airbus’ satellite fleet. “This new asset will reinforce our monitoring capabilities for sub-metre imaging and feed our OneAtlas digital platform to provide increased freshness,” said...
