Milestone Reached in Forest Monitoring from Space

Thanks to a major effort to ensure full satellite coverage of the world’s forests, all countries now have the necessary data for annual forest monitoring. This full and open forest data is available as a result of the open-data policies and collaboration of a variety of national space agencies and coordinating bodies. This advance in satellite coverage was coordinated by the Group on Earth Observations through its space arm, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), and through its flagship Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI). The satellite data underpinning this effort comes primarily from the United States Landsat series (USGS),... (read more)

Unique 3D Habitat Map of the Great Barrier Reef

International aquatic remote sensing company EOMAP recently showcased its unique contribution to the world's first 3D habitat map of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) at the International Forum on Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB Day 2019) in Australia. The mapping project, titled ‘3D live habitats for the full extent of the Great Barrier Reef’, will for the first time provide maps of the predicted coral types and underwater landscape for the more than 3,000 reefs within the 350,000 square kilometres of the GBR. EOMAP’s cutting-edge technology provides essential data for this revolutionary project, in which the University of Queensland (UQ), Great Barrier Reef Marine Park... (read more)

LandViewer Now Features Change Detection that Runs in Browser

The major utilization of remote sensing data has been to compare images of an area taken at different times and identify the changes it underwent. With a wealth of long-term satellite imagery currently in open use, detecting such changes manually would be time-consuming and most likely inaccurate. EOS Data Analytics has now introduced the automated Change Detection tool to its flagship product LandViewer – a cloud-based tool for satellite imagery search and analysis. Unlike the methods involving neural networks that identify changes in the previously extracted features, the change detection algorithm implemented by EOS is using a pixel-based strategy, meaning... Global Water Quality Monitoring Tool Available to Public

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) with EOMAP have launched an interactive tool providing access to detailed global water quality indicators from an archive of Earth Observation and satellite data. The portal was developed to support the UN’s International Initiative on Water Quality (IIWQ) of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP), and is the first tool to combine high-resolution global coverage with a range of satellite measurements for monitoring streams, lakes, rivers and coastal waters. The IIWQ Portal includes a functionality to select different time periods dating back over the last three decades. Historic measurements are provided at... (read more)
