Breaking New Ground in all Sectors

Attending the GeoCom17 conference, in October in London, it struck me how important geospatial information really is – and how it is already woven into society. London Transport used to count individual tube tickets to know of travel patterns in rush hour, as David Johnson of ONS showed us, there was an early consciousness that the information was valuable. And even in ‘regular’ statistics, he indicated that there’s a demand to add location data. This also is an issue in agriculture, where the traditional image of the farmer on his tractor is ploughing on. Completely wrong! He now is surrounded... (read more)

Bluesky Captures Ultra-high-resolution Aerial Survey of Dublin

Aerial mapping company Bluesky Ireland has captured the first-ever 12.5cm-resolution aerial photography coverage of the whole of the Greater Dublin area. Covering a total of 1,850 square kilometres, the imagery is so detailed that road markings, street furniture and property boundaries are all easily visible and is accurate for use in GIS and desktop mapping software. In another first for the Republic of Ireland, the data is also being made available through a dedicated web mapping service (WMS), allowing users to stream the imagery directly into their GIS or other compatible software. “This is a first for Ireland and is a... PrecisionHawk Opens Free Access to Software for UAV Mapping

PrecisionHawk, a leading commercial UAV and data company, has opened access to its professional mapping and analytics software, PrecisionMapper, for free. By eliminating the cost barrier, the company gives operators the flexibility to bring their own drone and consistently generate value from aerial information. UAVs have the potential to capture more high-resolution data than any other technology, but PrecisionHawk believes that drones are being under-utilised because of the cost barriers around processing, analytics and storage, said CEO Michael Chasen. Users should be able to walk into any store, buy a drone and use that drone to generate business insights for free. Xponential... (read more)

Africa Rising - Geospatial Must Underpin Economic Development

In November last year, Andrew Coote of ConsultingWhere visited Addis Ababa for the joint Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) and AfricaGIS conferences. GiSPro originally commissioned him to write a GSDI-focused report. But with colleague Phil Knight they realised that a wider focus on the rising use and importance of geospatial technology on the world’s most misunderstood continent would perhaps be a more valuable contribution. The quality and diversity of the projects described by African geospatial scientists in Addis Ababa was humbling. For too long, western eyes have often viewed Africa with a mixture of pity and despair, perhaps conditioned by... (read more)
