SCIRA - Guides for Smarter Cities

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), with support from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is currently leading a process to create a Smart City Interoperability Reference Architecture (SCIRA). SCIRA will provide free deployment guides and reusable patterns that municipalities can use to plan, acquire, and implement standards-based, cost-effective, vendor-agnostic, and future-proof smart city IT systems and networks using technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Sensor Webs, and Geospatial Information. SCIRA defines interoperability requirements based on a system-of-systems approach, meaning that municipalities are able to build up smart cities one project at a time, safe in the knowledge that... San Mateo County Entrusts GIS Implementation Project to DATAMARK

In advance of the transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), San Mateo County, California, has commissioned DATAMARK, the public safety GIS business of Michael Baker International, to complete an estimated US$400,000 data implementation project to ensure the accuracy and completeness of its address databases. The project, for completion in 2019, includes creating road centerlines, performing an address comparison evaluation, and aggregating GIS data from existing sources into one database to meet the specific provisioning needs of the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system and NG9-1-1 requirements. San Mateo County first engaged with Michael Baker International in 2017 on an enterprise technical architecture project to provide... (read more)

High-quality Aerial Imagery Helps to Unlock 5G Networks

Telecommunication operators are working at full speed to bring a 5G network to life in the early 2020s. Most operators are currently at the signal propagation planning stage and are defining optimal locations for the network nodes. Although widely used for the planning of 3G/4G networks, digital surface models generated from satellite images are insufficient for 5G antenna positioning. Another source, with required high-resolution data, is now available for the USA and large parts of Europe and Canada. 5G is the next generation of wireless network technologies. For 5G to become a reality, however, significant and fundamental changes need to... (read more)

Fund for the City of New York Advances OGC’s Underground Pilot Project

The Open Geospatial Consortium announces that the Fund for the City of New York (FCNY) has funded OGC to develop prototype data models for underground utility networks and for the soils that surround them. The goal is to ensure that underground utility data are collected in a manner that allows information about different utilities to be integrated and used interoperably. This will allow cities to create a coherent map of what is under the asphalt and will enable improved operations support, analysis, and modelling. The utility data models that are being developed through the OGC Innovation Program include water, sewer,... (read more)
