IXmaps Helps Canada See Where their Data Travels Online

The launch of a powerful Internet Mapping tool means Canadians now have an easy way to track exactly where their data is traveling across the Internet. The tool at IXmaps.ca — IXmaps stands for Internet Exchange Mapping — is the brainchild of a team of researchers at the University of Toronto and York University, led by Professor Andrew Clement. The IXmaps tool has been greatly improved to make it more user-friendly and accessible to the public, with a grant from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority's (CIRA) Community Investment Program and financial support from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC). The launch of the tool comes... (read more)

Standard to Improve the Way Information Is Referenced to the Earth

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has approved the Discrete Global Grid System (DGGS) as OGC Abstract Specification - Topic 21 [OGC 15-104r5]. The goal of DGGS is to enable rapid assembly of spatial data without the difficulties of working with projected coordinate reference systems. The OGC DGGS Abstract Specification standard defines the conceptual model and a set of rules for building highly efficient architectures for spatial data storage, integration and analytics. DGGSs represent the Earth as hierarchical sequences of equal area tessellations on the surface of the Earth, each with global coverage and with progressively finer spatial resolution. Individual observations... (read more)

The Blueprint Towards Gender Neutrality in IT

London recently played host to over 3,000 GIS professionals. What made it different from many other IT events was the large proportion of female industry experts in attendance, making it arguably, says Sarah Lewin head of pre-sales and tech research at Esri UK, the most gender-neutral IT event the industry has ever seen. We have become used to seeing news stories on the lack of women in IT with the general consensus being that on average only 17% of IT workers are female). Yet, at the Esri UK User Conference, it was almost double that. In fact, drilling down further... (read more)

Geospatial Technology is 99% Invisible

To give credit where due, 99% Invisible is the name of one of my favourite podcasts. The title comes from a quote from Buckminster Fuller about people, but the show highlights the hidden aspects of design and architecture. The stories reveal that we see and interact with just the end-product of the design process; the rest is invisible. I’ve been collecting evidence that geospatial technology, and the design behind it, is also 99% invisible. While out running, I saw another runner looking intently at the phone of a man in a suit. I asked if I could help them find a... (read more)
