Topcon Announces Advanced Bentley Integration for Aerial Photogrammetry Processing

Topcon Positioning Group has introduced the new cloud-based photogrammetry processing powered by Bentley ContextCapture to its MAGNET Collage Web web-based service for the publication, sharing and analysis of reality capture data. The integration allows MAGNET Collage Web users who share and collaborate with scanning and mesh datasets to now process and add unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or 'drone') photos directly to the MAGNET Collage 3D environment. The built-in Bentley ContextCapture Cloud Processing Service enables operators to upload UAV imagery direct-to-web without the need for high-end hardware requirements or IT constraints. Sharing UAV imagery projects “Operators with photos taken by any UAV will easily use the... (read more)

CurvSurf Unveils FindSurface for Mobile and AR Devices

South Korean company CurvSurf has introduced FindSurface SDK, an algorithm that will help us overcome one of the few remaining barriers to the use of 3D data: processing a point cloud into information we can exploit. The FindSurface SDK performs real-time, human-like recognition of 3D objects in point clouds. It works with point clouds generated by any device—from a terrestrial scanner to a consumer tablet with a 3D camera. Thinking like a human VP of business operations Sung-Ho Moon explains that The FindSurface SDK works a lot like the human brain. First, it reads the point cloud directly to pick... (read more)

Every GIS Student’s Nightmare - Finding a Research Topic

At conferences students ask me to suggest projects for course or capstone projects*, even after they have completed two or more courses (or years!) studying geospatial technology, science and use. Posts on a variety of GIS forums and discussion areas seek the same kind of help. How can educators and those of us in the field mentor students in this important part of their education? Why is Selection so Hard? Most of the queries I get are from undergraduates and masters students. In most cases, they can explore anything of interest that ties into GIS, geography and spatial analysis, in... (read more)

Creative Traps in Maps

Maps undoubtedly play an important role in society. From use in daily life to professional applications, maps help us navigate, plan activities and gain insight into our surrounding environment. Although we know that all maps have a certain accuracy, we rarely question the existence of streets and places we find on a map. Throughout time, however, various cartographers have used our good faith in maps to protect their work from being stolen. Their creative ways to trap copyright violators has led to a variety of map ‘mistakes’, some of which have survived for years before being discovered. This article presents... (read more)

Bluesky 3D Models Used to Create VR Simulation of Offshore Wind Farm

3D models from Bluesky are being used to communicate plans for a new offshore wind farm in Scotland. The interactive models allow users to ‘teleport’ around a virtual environment, viewing the proposed turbine development from the coast in the real-world context of existing buildings and trees. Created by environmental consultancy company SLR and commissioned by Inch Cape Offshore Limited (ICOL), the scale 3D model has already been used for public consultations and a visual impact study for the proposed scheme off the east coast. Created from high resolution aerial photography, the data supplied by Bluesky included a detailed and accurate... (read more)
