Geospatial, IoT and the Digital Twin

The IoT phenomenon, although still in its infancy, has revolutionised almost every sector in today's world. Among the many buzzwords associated with the field is one known as the 'Digital Twin'. The Digital Twin concept refers to a means by which industrial machinery, buildings, devices and their component parts are designed, engineered, monitored and maintained both physically and digitally. Essentially, the Digital Twin is a virtual representation of an asset, and it's based on the rationale that one can better understand how it operates and interacts with the surrounding world through designing an exact replica. The Benefit of Digital Twins... (read more)

Technical Advances Bring Digital Twin of Underground Infrastructure Closer

Mapping the underground is one of the major challenges in creating an infrastructure map at the municipal, regional, and national level, which is a key foundation for a national digital twin. Recent technical developments include: the ability to collect data at highway speeds that can be used to create a 3D model of underground infrastructure, software that can extract relevant 3D underground information from consumer digital photography, and video capture. Meanwhile, novel ways to share information about underground infrastructure, and progress on standards for sharing information about the subsurface are making mapping the underground increasingly feasible. The uncertainty in the... (read more)

Digital Transformation in New Zealand

In January 2016, staff from New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) were supplied with tablets and smartphones equipped with Survey123 for ArcGIS, a form-centric mobile data collection application. The Hokitika township biodiversity monitoring field team used this mobile app as well as their current paper-based capture methods to evaluate the potential of digital data collection technologies in their workflows. This undertaking showed that not only can Survey123 improve efficiency and reduce field data capture operational costs, but it can also make captured data available easily and instantly for visualisation and analysis. Like many other government departments, the New Zealand DOC... (read more)

Using Location Intelligence to Drive Digital Engagement

Three ā€˜Dā€™sā€™ Drive Government
Government organisations are using location intelligence to drive digital engagement, argues James Brayshaw, to drive down costs and engage with citizens. But there is still room for more transparency and raising public awareness through a multi-channel approach. As government organisations are facing wider and more complex pressures than ever before, the ‘three Ds’ are tasked with driving its transformation: Decentralisation, Digital, and Data. Decentralisation is pushing increasing power back into the hands of local government agencies, who need to ensure they have the capacity and capabilities to deliver. Digital By Default means providing a multi-channel service to citizens with limited... (read more)
