Geospatial Gender Balance - My Two Cents

The gender imbalance in the STEM world is, according to Niall Conway, no secret; we only need to look at the industry’s past to try understand why this is the case. The geospatial industry, is to a certain degree, tied to its traditional male-dominated roots. From the early exploration and conquering days, to the resources, utilities, and military industries, maps were created and used for the purposes of acquiring and maintaining power. This perhaps explains why the technical subject which is map-making appears to have, before now at least, neither appealed to, nor been as accessible to women as it... (read more)

Geospatial and Health Care - UNCAP Conference 2015

A conference in Nottingham around emerging geospatial technologies offered some interesting solutions for supporting and caring for Europe’s ageing population. But we need to make sure we get the standards right as several speakers emphasised, reports Stephen Booth. Most of you reading GiSPro are geospatial buffs. You understand the benefits digital mapping linked to databases of information can deliver. Some of you are even geospatial evangelists – constantly encouraging others and seeking new areas of human activity where our technology can bring benefit. Whilst only being a commentator in that latter category, I did promise readers in the last issue... (read more)

The Breadth and Depth of Smart Geospatial

With the summer now well past us, I’m sure many of you (like me) are reminiscing of peaceful days in amazing and beautiful places, escaping from the desktop. I really did opt for remote this year, with an escape to Shetland – time in the most northerly settlement in the UK and never 3 miles from the coast, it made for spectacular views and a feeling of being incredibly close to nature. Over recent weeks, I’m reminded that our planet is breathtakingly beautiful the world over – but also incredibly fragile. It’s impossible to avoid the news of environmental devastation... (read more)

More Maps From Big Data?

The rise of mapmaking amongst those without cartographic qualifications presents a challenge, argues Nico Regnauld. Big data and the ever expanding demand for mapping on a variety of devices means generalisation of datasets and integration of skills. The arrival of new software tools can speed up this work for both neo and traditional cartographers. For centuries maps have been an effective way to display location information; how things relate to one another geographically. This information can be represented in many forms: georeferenced coordinates, addresses, place names, relative position (5 miles south of the Angel of the North) etc. The most... (read more)
