Big Geospatial Data Helps Modernise the Statistical Field

Geospatial tools and information are going mainstream, as is evident following the recent opening of a new data science campus at the Office for National Statistics headquarters. Niall Conway explains how the fields of Statistics, Big Data and Geospatial are beginning to converge in order to deliver better insights to government. Technology, including geospatial, is revolutionising how we go about our lives. With the help of satellites, computers, smartphones and other devices, it is estimated more data has been created in the past two to three years than in the entire previous history of the human race. However, while this... (read more)

OGC, GEO & UN-GGIM - Driving the Global Geospatial Agenda

This article sets out to explain the distinct but interrelated roles of the three international bodies which are driving the global geospatial agenda which underpins the need for smart and sustainable growth in the 21st century: The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). If you are interested in how the geospatial industry and associated policy supports government and broader commercial sector activities, then it is important to understand the global influences which are shaping these sectors. You need to look at the world... (read more)

Global Forum on the Integration of Statistical and Geospatial Information

The Global Forum, held at the UN headquarters in New York, 4-5 August, brought together for the first time the heads of national statistical offices and national geospatial information authorities from around the world. Their mission was to discuss the strategic goals and vision for the integration of statistics and geospatial information. The Forum reflects the critical importance of integrating geospatial information with statistics and socio-economic data as well as the development of a geospatial-statistical framework. It was stressed that maps and statistics are not so effective in isolation; only when they are combined within an overall information management framework... (read more)

senseFly and Trimble Optimise Workflow for Geospatial Drone Operators

senseFly, a leading producer of professional drone solutions, has announced a new software integration with Trimble, which optimises the drone mapping workflow for geospatial professionals. The new integration between the companies' software ensures the smoothest possible end-to-end mapping drone (UAS) workflow. senseFly operators can now, within the recently launched eMotion 3.5 drone software, transform a senseFly S.O.D.A. camera’s georeferenced imagery into an automatically collated project (.jxl format). This enables the simple, one-click import of drone imagery into the Trimble Business Center Aerial Photogrammetry module without the need for manual project creation and organisation of images. The senseFly-to-Trimble mapping workflow becomes... (read more)

3D Repo Adds Geospatial Dimension to Digital Construction Week

The annual Digital Construction Week kicked off on Monday 16 October with a packed British Information Modelling event held at the Geovation hub in central London. The fourth in a series of bi-annual events organised by 3D Repo, speakers from Bryden Wood, Skanska, Flux, Ordnance Survey and Podaris took up a geospatial theme with delegates debating issues such as data access, integration and collaboration. Skanska’s Vaibhav Tyagi talked about its lead in the Innovate UK government backed project to provide integration between geospatial and BIM data. Elite Sher of Bryden Wood was then joined by 3D Repo’s Pavol Knapo to present their developments... (read more)

Brexit and Geospatial - Could it Spur Better Services?

The uncertainties created by the Brexit vote seem to have receded for the moment. The dire economic warnings that preceded the referendum have not happened (yet) and the UK seems to be enjoying not only unseasonably good weather but an economic Indian Summer too. But this is not to say that there are not many in our sector who face a worrying future, either because their job depends on EU projects or funding, or are themselves citizens from continental Europe working in the UK. As David Hannay, our former ambassador to the EU points out, “Why not assume that it... (read more)

An Early Careers Perspective - Women in Geospatial 2018

I kicked off International Women’s Day 2018 in the best way possible by taking part in the “Women in Geospatial” breakfast, a discussion on careers and challenges that women in the geospatial profession face. Opportunities like these are a great way to network and share successes, fears, and experiences with an open-minded group. Sometimes, forums like this can be dominated by high-flyers – confident people, natural networkers – which may be intimidating to someone who’s just starting out in their career. This wasn’t at all the case at the Geovation Hub: as an empowering experience, it was exactly the kind... (read more)
