Taking Tools to People for Offline Mapping

Accurate maps play a critical role in understanding communities, particularly for populations at risk of natural disasters and health emergencies. Dan Joseph and colleagues explain how the American Red Cross has mobilised thousands of volunteers to help map vulnerable communities around the world. Much of the Global North has been mapped with incredible detail and is accessible through the smartphones in our pockets. This is not the reality for billions of people around the globe, however. Families and individuals often do not exist to decisionmakers because their communities do not exist on maps. Without maps, disaster responders often cannot access... (read more)

The Mystery of Russia’s Cold War Mapping

During the cold war period, the Soviet Union created highly detailed mapping of the UK, often including features omitted from contemporary large scale OS mapping. But why did they do it? This enigmatic mapping remains a useful resource in tracing the history of sites prior to redevelopment. Martyn Lufkin, data team leader at Landmark Information explains. As every GIS professional will confirm, the basis of any successful project is founded on the quality of the mapping data used. As a nation, we are fortunate to have access to a huge repository of Ordnance Survey maps that range in detail, complexity... (read more)

Cianad Software Launch Online Mapping Platform Azimap

Cianad Software has announced the launch of their innovative online mapping platform Azimap which began development in 2014, led by husband and wife team, Ciara and David McQuillan, who spotted a gap in the market for an affordable, easy-to-use yet feature-rich online mapping tool. “Setting Azimap apart from the pack is its suite of advanced spatial analysis tools. Users can capture, create, edit and publish data seamlessly in one complete online GIS. Azimap is fully configurable and ultimately removes the requirement for multiple expensive desktop GIS software licenses” reveals the managing director. The initial development of the software was supported by... (read more)

Esri Announces ArcGIS Indoors Mapping System

Esri has announced ArcGIS Indoors, a complete indoor mapping system. Scheduled for release in Q4 of 2018, the system will offer a floor-aware location platform providing maps, data and location information for indoor spaces. It is targeted for use in facilities, retail and commercial locations, airports, hospitals, event venues and universities, to analyse, optimise, locate, navigate, collaborate and share indoor information. An example of a use case was Esri’s own International User Conference, where visitors can schedule a day worth of sessions and receive walking directions based on their current location inside the venue of the event. However, the system... (read more)

Increasing Compatibility with UAVs for Precise Mapping

Effigis Geo Solutions (Effigis), a Canadian innovation company that designs, implements and uses geospatial solutions, has launched a new version of EZSurv, the GNSS post-processing software of its flagship OnPOZ suite of software. The release will especially please users of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or 'drones'), with a new UAV image position interpolation module that spares them the trouble of manipulating files. Never before has the process been so short and free of errors – from PPK software to image analysis. The new release now enables users to easily set and save drone configuration and to import Exif image files... (read more)

DroneDeploy Releases Real-time Thermal Mapping for Commercial Drones

DroneDeploy, a drone software company with the largest drone data platform in the world, has announced the launch of Thermal Live Map, a real-time mobile mapping solution which delivers insights only thermal imagery can reveal. A first-of-its-kind feature, Thermal Live Map visualises temperature range variability and creates instant thermal maps for quick, data-guided decisions on the job site. Traditionally thermal inspections have been time-consuming, limited to accessible areas, or required manned aircraft that typically yield low-resolution data at a high price. DroneDeploy’s Thermal Live Map solves these issues by providing immediate visual context to situations unseen by the naked eye... (read more)

REMAP Harnesses Google and NASA Data for Ecosystem Mapping App

University of New South Wales’s (UNSW) has developed REMAP, a mapping tool that uses machine learning and archival Landsat data to map ecosystem change. The app uses machine learning to develop a map which users can train to classify specific ecosystem types by identifying a few pixels from Google Earth, or by uploading their own field data. From that little bit of data, REMAP can apply that information to recognise ecosystems in a selected area and then returns results that let users know the final extent of the ecosystem and how much it has changed over time. “In the past... Virtual Surveyor Unveils Terrain Lenses in Drone Mapping Software

Virtual Surveyor has unveiled Terrain Lenses in Version 6.3 of its drone surveying and mapping software. Overlaid on a Lidar point cloud or orthophoto, the six lenses enhance different aspects of the terrain in 3D to give users a better understanding of the topography in the area they mapped with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The Virtual Surveyor package enables professional surveyors to generate accurate topographic end products from drone data five times faster than traditional fieldwork, bridging the gap between UAV photogrammetric processing software and engineering design packages. “Whether a drone surveyor is generating map products from orthorectified imagery...
