Bluesky Tree Map Helps Identify Diseases in UK Trees

Bluesky, creator of the National Tree Map, is working with researchers at the University of Leicester, UK, to investigate the use of airborne mapping systems to identify diseases in trees. The health of UK forestry has been in the news for many years with Sudden Oak Death, Dutch Elm and more recently Ash Die Back and Red Band Needle Drop all generating headlines. Funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and supported by Forest Research, the study will investigate the use of aerial photography, thermal imaging and airborne laser mapping systems to improve the identification of diseases, determine the... Monitoring, Mapping, and Modelling Saltmarsh

The UAV Way
Coastal and estuarine saltmarsh has long been recognised as having key physical, ecological, and recreational value, acting as sediment and nutrient traps and as natural coastal protection structures functioning as protective buffers between the land and sea. Additionally, they are important areas for shelter, feeding and breeding of diverse forms of wildlife (Doody, 2007). Recent work suggests that saltmarshes are particularly good for demonstrating how the coast can change in response to environmental influences, including relative sea level rise. The pace of current Scottish relative sea level rise (Rennie and Hansom, 2011) may lead to inundation of coastal saltmarsh, with... (read more)

DigitalGlobe Partners with Vodafone to Create IoT for Agriculture

DigitalGlobe has announced the release of Sensing4Farming, an Internet of Things (IoT) product for smart, digital and precision agriculture created in partnership with Vodafone Spain, part of the Vodafone Group. Sensing4Farming provides crucial insights about crop health to farmers, agronomists, and agro-businesses via any device to optimise agriculture productions. Sensing4Farming utilizes data from DigitalGlobe's multispectral, high-resolution satellite imagery, which reveals information that cannot be seen by the human eye about vegetation health, such as plant age and chlorophyll concentration. Ground-based sensors deployed in crop fields by Qampo also provide data for Sensing4Farming, such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity and other agroclimatic parameters to complement... Geomni Launches Mobile App for Ground Imagery and Drone Inspections

Geomni, a Verisk business, has launched its new mobile app for ground imagery and UAV inspections. The app enables users to collect imagery and other data directly with their mobile devices or to conduct complete UAV inspections with compatible DJI drones. “The idea behind the app is for inspectors in the field to be able to do their jobs without having to venture onto steep rooftops or climb to unsafe positions. They can now gather exterior imagery and measurements needed from the safety of the ground,” said Jeffery C. Taylor, Geomni’s president. The mobile app enables iOS smartphones and tablets...
