Why a Smart City is the Only Possible City

There are not so many people around thinking about the area they dwell in. I mean really thinking about efficiency, economy, aesthetics, and standards. We rarely even raise our heads up and turn our eyes away from our smartphones to contemplate the scenery or enjoy the view in a city – and more often than not it’s justified. City of the Past In the past, cities were organized next to water supplies with the distance not exceeding one mile from a river or lake, which made water delivery possible. The Role of Geological Data in the Smart City Agenda

Advances in the use of GIS and 3D modelling software have meant that there is now a greater opportunity to develop geo-environmental information systems for urban development, argues Dr Katherine Royse of BGS. By 2050, 70% of the world’s population will be living in cities. Cities have a major impact on the social and economic development of nations. They consume 75% of the world’s resources. This evolution raises a very important change with regard to the deployment and management of all types of infrastructures within cities. The sustainable development of our cities is of paramount importance if cities are to cope... Bluesky 3D Models Improve 5G and Smart City Network Planning

3D digital models derived from high-resolution aerial photography are helping network operators plan the rollout of services including WISP (Fixed Wireless Access), 5G and Smart City applications. The work by Leeds based Wireless Coverage uses Digital Terrain and Surface (DTM / DSM) models. Derived from Bluesky’s aerial photography, the models are used within Wireless Coverage’s WISDM software which uses GPU Acceleration technology to create dynamic coverage maps. These maps are already being used to help operators plan network infrastructure, undertake property level look-ups and conduct marketing campaigns. “Recent jumps in wireless technology allow huge uplifts in speed of data access... Leapfrogging Urban Problems with Smart Cities

Preserving Well-being and Economic Growth in India
The upsurge in urban population in Indian cities will intensify societal challenges on every conceivable level. To improve the quality of life and attract investment in cities, proactive measures are now essential for government agencies. They will inevitably become increasingly dependent on geo-ICT in order to develop and manage their assets and infrastructures more efficiently and effectively. This facilitates – and also demands – elimination of ‘silos’ within city authorities. In 2016, India’s government will select 100 municipalities to turn substantial parts of their urbanisations into ‘smart cities’. The pace of urbanisation is so high that in 15 years’ time...
