Safe & the City Launch App to Combat Sexual Harassment

London-based tech start-up, Safe & the City, has launched its personal safety app designed to battle opportunistic crimes and sexual harassment on streets by using GPS technology, crowdsourced information and crime data from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in London. The app uses police data to alert users in advance before approaching intersections with a patterned history of crime. Safe & The City enables its users to report incidents based on how safe a route feels to mobilise tangible changes to improve safety on streets. In combining crowdsourced information on underreported experiences, like sexual harassment, with accurate data from the... (read more)

EarthSense Model Impact of Green Infrastructure on City Traffic Pollution

Scientists from EarthSense Systems and the University of Leicester have published the results of a study into the effect of urban trees on air pollution. The results show a direct link between air pollution and green infrastructure, with trees and grass cover contributing to a reduction in concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The newly published research shows that the aerodynamic dispersive effect of trees results in a 9.0 percent reduction in PM2.5 concentrations. A decrease of PM2.5, by 2.8 percent owing to deposition on trees and 0.6 percent owing to deposition on grass, was also observed. Conducted on a... (read more)

CloudCities adds IFC Support to its 3D City Models

CloudCities, formerly known as SmarterBetterCities, has announced a new upgrade to its platform to support the IFC (industry foundation classes) file format for BIM. This news follows the company’s announcement last October that it had integrated VUEWorks asset management products into its 3D city model service. That partnership enabled the easy integration of asset data, BIM, CAD, and GIS information with 3D reality data such as 3D meshes. With the added IFC support, the company says, working with BIM in the cloud is simplified further. The import workflow now offers user-friendly grouping options. CloudCities has also added an attribute editor,... (read more)

Plymouth Prepares City for Emergencies with GGP's Mapping Technology

Plymouth is using the latest mapping technology to prepare the city for major emergencies. Plymouth City Council is using a Geographic Information System (GIS) from GGP Systems to help produce emergency planning maps. The Council’s Civil Protection Unit has created the mapping for a range of exercises relating to a major incident in the city such as flooding, terrorist attacks or even a nuclear accident. Prepared for use in the event of a real-life scenario, the maps are, however, vital for staff training and inter-agency coordination, and have supported the launch of a new warn and inform service for residents... The Expanding Field of 3D City Model Applications

The application space of 3D city models has expanded hand in hand with technical advancements. In addition to the ‘traditional’ use cases in urban planning and zoning, 3D city models are expected to facilitate energy analysis, detailed architectural visualisation, interactive and immersive applications development, and participatory GIS. All this places challenging requirements on 3D city model platforms. The discussion about 3D city models is further complicated by the amount of different platforms used for 3D city model applications. In addition to the professional GIS/CAD tools, 3D city models are used on game engines and various web-based 3D viewers, such as... (read more)

Fund for the City of New York Advances OGC’s Underground Pilot Project

The Open Geospatial Consortium announces that the Fund for the City of New York (FCNY) has funded OGC to develop prototype data models for underground utility networks and for the soils that surround them. The goal is to ensure that underground utility data are collected in a manner that allows information about different utilities to be integrated and used interoperably. This will allow cities to create a coherent map of what is under the asphalt and will enable improved operations support, analysis, and modelling. The utility data models that are being developed through the OGC Innovation Program include water, sewer,... (read more)
