Bluesky and Skyline Create Dynamic 3D Building and City Models

Aerial mapping company Bluesky is working with SkylineGlobe UK on a project to provide high-accuracy, photorealistic 3D city models that will be available as off-the-shelf datasets and via an internet streaming service. The new, dynamic 3D models will provide a visualization and analytical platform for smart city projects, transport and infrastructure planning, risk assessment and mitigation, development planning and environmental work. To create these unique 3D digital twins, Bluesky and Skyline will integrate leading-edge technologies. To capture the city imagery, Bluesky has deployed its hybrid oblique imaging and Lidar airborne sensor. Skyline is then processing and publishing the data into... (read more)

Nottingham City Council’s Open Data Initiative Supported by FME & 1Spatial

1Spatial’s Certified FME consultants supported Nottingham City Council’s use of FME technology to reduce the response time of Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) requests. Production of validated and redacted FOI responses for council spend data now takes just one hour per month, with significantly reduced manual input. The council is now meeting government response targets despite a steady increase in FOI requests. Certified FME training and technical support from 1Spatial assisted in making this possible. The technical expertise of 1Spatial, the spatial big data company, enabled the Council to create scheduled, rules-based automation using FME. The Council automated time-consuming... (read more)

Irish City of the Future Uses Aerial Photomaps to Inform Development Plans

Limerick City and County Council is using the latest aerial photography and 3D height data from Bluesky to improve the planning and delivery of strategic services. Served to advanced users via the council’s Geographic Information System (GIS) software and via the corporate map browser for the remainder of staff, the highly detailed digital photomaps give a real world view of the city recently awarded a chart topping place in the European Cities of the Future Awards 2018/19. The Irish Council has also taken delivery of detailed height model of the entire council area and boundary with neighbouring authorities. "This is... (read more)

World’s First Garden City Looks to the Future with GIS Software from Cadcorp

North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) is migrating from a bespoke web mapping application to an off-the-shelf application from British software developer, Cadcorp. The upgrade will make interactive web mapping available to more than 300 council employees. NHDC’s GIS Manager, John Barnacle, explains the move, “The Council licensed Cadcorp’s geospatial web services engine, GeognoSIS, in 2005 and Cadcorp developers built us an associated web mapping application to our own specifications based on that engine. The application has served us well for the last ten years, both as a public-facing web site, and as a back-office application. However, we are constantly reviewing... (read more)

Urban Energy Modelling - Semantic 3D City Data as Virtual and Augmented Reality

The visualisation of results from urban energy modelling and simulation is a crucial part of energy research as it is the main communication tool among scientists, engineers and decision-makers. Energy modelling and simulation results are directly linked to spatial objects, and 3D therefore becomes a necessity. The multiple interactive 3D visualisation environments that exist are mainly targeted as 3D viewers for use on desktop machines and lack immersive components that enable users to truly immerse themselves, explore and interact with the real environment onsite. In this study, the team focused on a holistic approach that implements a seamless transition from... (read more)

SCIRA - Guides for Smarter Cities

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), with support from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is currently leading a process to create a Smart City Interoperability Reference Architecture (SCIRA). SCIRA will provide free deployment guides and reusable patterns that municipalities can use to plan, acquire, and implement standards-based, cost-effective, vendor-agnostic, and future-proof smart city IT systems and networks using technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Sensor Webs, and Geospatial Information. SCIRA defines interoperability requirements based on a system-of-systems approach, meaning that municipalities are able to build up smart cities one project at a time, safe in the knowledge that... Esri CityEngine 2017 Makes Urban Planning More Efficient

Esri has announced the release of CityEngine 2017. This version of the 3D modelling software offers features that let planners and architects compare different scenarios and visualize them with dashboards to view how each would affect the same geographic area—all in real time. Users can also make changes to specific features—such as adjusting the size of windows or adding a balcony—in a model without affecting the entire structure. Before, planners would have to create two entirely different projects to understand the consequences of a proposed building's design variations. “With this release of CityEngine, we focused on the needs of urban...
