Topcon Introduces MAGNET Inspect for UAV Inspection Applications

Topcon Positioning Group has announced a software package designed to facilitate data processing workflow for UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) infrastructure inspection - MAGNET Inspect. The software efficiently manages large UAV data sets to create inspection reports. “MAGNET Inspect will work with models from virtually any UAV. When combined with Intel Falcon 8+ Drone – Topcon Edition and Topcon ContextCapture, powered by Bentley Systems, the software enables operators to efficiently navigate, annotate, and create reports with inspection photos, effectively creating a very strong end-to-end inspection workflow,” said David Ahl, director of software product management. “It is now a key element of the Topcon end-to-end UAV and... FARO Updates SCENE for Faster Performance and Better VR

FARO has announced the 2018 version of its processing and visualisation solution for their Focus line of scanners. This platform has been developed with an eye toward optimising “the entire AEC construction lifecycle,” or what FARO calls “traceable construction.” The software includes a new feature called Laser-HDR that uses a proprietary process to “intelligently” combine a laser scan image and a photograph. FARO promises that the results improve on conventional multi-exposure HDR techniques, cutting down on scan time by 5x and reducing data volume to 150MB per scan. Notably, the feature is compatible with “all generations” of FARO Focus laser scanners,... (read more)

The Age of Geo-Literacy - ArcGIS for Schools

Esri have big plans for the next phase of GIS, and it all starts in the classroom. In the following article, Niall Conway reflects on his recent experience at the Esri UK Annual Conference in May and explains why understanding of GIS is likely to increase in years to come. Over the last 10 years, I’ve developed an interest in GIS education, particularly in terms of how the subject is taught and how the imagination of students is captured and maintained. This interest began while undertaking a postgraduate in Urban Planning in 2007, where only two of my fifty or... (read more)

GIS Education is Key to Our Future

Last month, while travelling from Konstanz, a town in the south of Germany, to Memmingen airport, I engaged in a conversation with a fellow train passenger. After discussing the German football team’s shock early exit from the World Cup, our conversation turned to a far more worrying subject – the condition of the rural landscape on the other side of the train window. “Our nature is in major trouble. And we don’t know what to do about it”, he said. The gentleman noted that over the past 20 years insect, bird and wildlife numbers, have in some parts of the... (read more)

Buzz and Balance - GEO Business 2018

This year’s GEO Business conference, held on 22-23 May in London’s Islington, was, according to Geomatics World editors Ian Dowman and Richard Groom, the biggest and best yet. The following is a summary of their report on the event which hosted 203 exhibitors from 25 countries, 100 exhibitor workshops, as well as many high profile speakers and seminars. It should provide a taste of the type of topics which were discussed during this excellent annual event. Digital Transformation Mark Enzer, Chief Technical Officer of Mott MacDonald, presented on the topic of digital transformation in economic infrastructure, with a particular focus... (read more)

Pointfuse Powers Virtual Reality for West End and Broadway Shows

Pointfuse point cloud software is helping to boost the appeal of West End and Broadway with laser scanning and Virtual Reality (VR) specialist Preevue by dramatically reducing the time taken to process complex laser scans into usable and accessible 3D models for visualisations. These visualisations, created with Preevue’s in house VR software, are used to see how a set design fits in a new theatre, optimise line of sight modifications to maximise ticket sales and provide virtual site visits. Preevue has already used Pointfuse on Jim Steinman’s ‘Bat out of Hell - The Musical’ when it made its West End... (read more)
