Geodata for all is the Growing Reality

This year’s UK Esri conference attracted an astounding 2500 attendees, up by a thousand from 2014. As always, it was an incredibly busy day with far too many sessions to try to cover. I hope we’ve managed to convey a flavour of the event (begins page 26) through several significant projects including the Port of Rotterdam, Transport for London, the new Irish Water authority and Sellafield. In addition, it was a chance to see some clever apps under development and to pause to understand the impact that data collected from mobile phones is likely to have (see also Robin waters... Virtual Surveyor Unveils Terrain Lenses in Drone Mapping Software

Virtual Surveyor has unveiled Terrain Lenses in Version 6.3 of its drone surveying and mapping software. Overlaid on a Lidar point cloud or orthophoto, the six lenses enhance different aspects of the terrain in 3D to give users a better understanding of the topography in the area they mapped with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The Virtual Surveyor package enables professional surveyors to generate accurate topographic end products from drone data five times faster than traditional fieldwork, bridging the gap between UAV photogrammetric processing software and engineering design packages. “Whether a drone surveyor is generating map products from orthorectified imagery... Over Four Thousand Students Participate in Virtual Field Trip

More young people than ever before are taking an interest in the geospatial industry; a record 4000-plus students recently took part in the LINZ-led virtual field trip. Students from more than 150 schools took a virtual trip online to the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, where they heard from geospatial experts, rangers and historians about how they are using location-based technology to support their work. The theme was to map my Waahi – Waahi means a place of historic importance. Each student chose a place important to them and learned how to visualise information about it – stories of... (read more)
