FIG Regional Conference

The 8th FIG Regional Conference will be held in Montevideo, Uruguay from 26 to 29 November 2012. This event will be organised by FIG and the Asociación de Agrimensores del Uruguay (Surveyors Association of Uruguay). The conference will be co-sponsored by agencies of the United Nations and the World Bank. Other international and regional partners will participate in the conference as well as FIG sister organisations from the Joint Board of Geospatial Information Societies (JB-GIS).

The theme of the 8th FIG Regional Conference is ‘Surveying towards Sustainable Development’, emphasising the importance of sustainability in the region and the key role surveying plays in ensuring sustainable futures. Subthemes are:
- Land Management and Legal Framework
- Education in Surveying, New Scopes and New Technologies
- Building up Spatial Data Infrastructures

Keynotes are expected from key persons from the United Nations, World bank, local organisations, representatives from member organisations and from industry.

This Regional Conference will be structured to include a three-day technical programme and a one-day technical programme that will include a visit to Colonia’s historic quarter, a World Heritage Site. The overall technical programme should stimulate discussions amongst participants on the role and contribution of the surveying profession in addressing the challenges of the times, in particular, towards sustainability in the region.

The 8th FIG Regional Conference continues the tradition in which FIG continues to provide a global forum within a region for sharing and exchanging practices and experiences so that surveyors, armed with knowledge and best practices, can extend the usefulness of surveying for the benefit of society, the environment and the economy and is thereby increasingly positioned as being significant and relevant within his/her community.

The conference is open to participants from all over the world and the languages will be English and Spanish.

In the globalised world we are in, sharing knowledge, information and data ‘through’ compatible coordinates systems is a necessity which we are slowly solving and regions in South America must find official and formalised ways. For this reason, a lot of attention will be given to technological, educational and professional aspects. Education is a key issue in Latin America.
