X Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Geographic Information Systems

The X Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Geographic Information Systems (XIBCGIS) will take place in the San Juan City (Puerto Rico) on 6 to 9 September 2005. The organisation of the Conference is a responsibility of the Department of Environmental Health, Department of Geography, Department of Environmental Sciences, the Atlantea Project and the Divisions of Continual Education of the Graduated School of Public Health and the Rio Piedras Campus. All these institutions are part of the University of Puerto Rico. This Conference is realised every two years in different countries. Its objective is to promote the debate and the academic exchange about the science of the geographic information between investigators of the diverse iberoamerican institutions and, therefore, it constitutes a valuable moment for the discussion of the actual status of knowledge and application of the GIS.


Structure
The structure of the XIBCGIS includes workshops. Four workshops will be programmed in September 6 from 8am to 4pm. The subjects and the professors of the workshops are the ones described in the following:


  • Spatial Analysis with Geographic Information Systems: Dr. Gustavo D. Buzai, CONICET / University of Buenos Aires.
  • Used of GIS in urban studies and land planning: Dr. Antonio Zarate, Distance Learning University, Madrid.
  • Applications of GIS in the location of services: Dr. Joaquin Bosque Sendra-Alcala University and Dr. Antonio Moreno- National Autonomous University of Madrid.
  • New remote sensing technologies for GIS: Dr. Emilio Chuvieco- Alcala University, Madrid.


The thematic part of the X Conference will commence in September 7. This will include magisterial conferences and presentations, grouped according to the thematic axis are mentioned in the following:


  • Methodology
  • The Geographic Information: collision and methods
  • Natural Resources and Environment
  • Municipal Applications
  • Urban and Territorial Planning
  • Landscape Analysis
  • Public politics and GIS
  • Geomorphology, Hydrology and Biogeography
  • Transports, geomarketing and localization of equipments
  • Health, dwelling, education, tourism and services
  • Agrarian activities
  • Sustainable Development and global changes
  • Theory and practice of GIS teaching
  • Cartography in the production of the geographic knowledge
  • Treatment and presentation of the geographic information


Registration
To register a paper as presentation, the authors must send a resume indicating the thematic axis and the modality chosen. The resume must have among 200 to 250 words, without illustrations; it must be made in word, page size A4, font Times New Roman 12, space 1,5, with left margin of 3cm and the other margins of 2,5 cm; centralised title in capital and boldface letters; author's complete name, institution name and author's email, in capital and small, normal and centralised; justified text and with indentation.


The presentations will consist of 15 minutes of exposition and 5 minutes of questions. The resume must be sent to the following email: jseguinot@rcm.upr.edu, until 06-30-2005, indicating the thematic axis in which the paper must be included.


The complete work must have between 15 to 30 pages, in Word, page size A4, font Times New Roman 12, space 1,5, with left margin of 3cm and the other margins of 2,5cm; centralised title in capital and boldface letters; author's complete name, institution name and author's email, in capital and small, normal and centralised; justified text and with indentation. The languages of the papers, and also the X Conference are: Spanish, English and Portuguese.
