CloudCities adds IFC Support to its 3D City Models

CloudCities, formerly known as SmarterBetterCities, has announced a new upgrade to its platform to support the IFC (industry foundation classes) file format for BIM. This news follows the company’s announcement last October that it had integrated VUEWorks asset management products into its 3D city model service. That partnership enabled the easy integration of asset data, BIM, CAD, and GIS information with 3D reality data such as 3D meshes. With the added IFC support, the company says, working with BIM in the cloud is simplified further. The import workflow now offers user-friendly grouping options. CloudCities has also added an attribute editor,... (read more)

LINZ support for 3D Mapping of Northland

LINZ is partnering in a project to map Northland using Lidar – a method for collecting 3D data on our land and its features. Uses for Lidar data include flood risk assessment, urban planning, forestry and precision agriculture. Improved elevation data is major contributor to LINZ strategic initiatives to improve resilience to natural events and increase the use of geographic information. LINZ is also working with local government to ensure that New Zealand’s Lidar data is collected at a consistent standard and is made freely available on the LINZ Data Service (LDS). Northland data will be collected to this standard... (read more)

The First Global Data-driven 3D Ocean Map

With only roughly 10% of oceans having been explored in any detail, the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), an intergovernmental partnership that seeks innovative solutions to global challenges, commissioned a global map of Ecological Marine Units (EMUs). This map will support the wise use of ocean resources and the preservation of environmental resilience by providing a framework for understanding processes and detecting change. Released in September 2016, the EMU project was created through an innovative public-private partnership led by Esri and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in collaboration with NatureServe, the Marine Conservation Institute, the University of Auckland (New...
