ColourCloud Processing Hosted on Google Cloud Platform

NCTech, a developer of reality imaging systems, has announced its ColourCloud software is being hosted on Google Cloud Platform. At the Google Cloud Next ’17 conference, Intel confirmed that the next-generation Intel Xeon processor family (also known as Skylake) is now available on Google Cloud Platform. Google Cloud Platform is the first to offer cloud services based on Skylake. The Intel Xeon processor supports Intel AVX-512 instructions to run compute-intensive workloads more efficiently, such as high-performance computing, video processing and data analytics. This development provides powerful support for the capture and processing of 3D imaging. With ColourCloud now hosted on Google... (read more)

Global Mapper Chosen for UAV Imagery Processing

US, Colorado-based DroneMapper has selected Global Mapper to perform the bulk of its data processing workflows. The company employs the software’s 2D and 3D visualisation tools to provide quality control of its ortho-rectified imagery and makes use of Global Mapper’s Lidar processing capabilities for DTM creation and terrain analysis. Unlike most companies who evaluate multiple software alternatives, DroneMapper found Global Mapper first and has stuck with it. The range of functionality in tandem with the format support convinced them that Global Mapper was an ideal solution for their needs. For over two decades, Blue Marble's GIS software has been meeting... (read more)

Increasing Compatibility with UAVs for Precise Mapping

Effigis Geo Solutions (Effigis), a Canadian innovation company that designs, implements and uses geospatial solutions, has launched a new version of EZSurv, the GNSS post-processing software of its flagship OnPOZ suite of software. The release will especially please users of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or 'drones'), with a new UAV image position interpolation module that spares them the trouble of manipulating files. Never before has the process been so short and free of errors – from PPK software to image analysis. The new release now enables users to easily set and save drone configuration and to import Exif image files... (read more)

Maptek Launches Spatial Data Application PointStudio

Maptek has launched a new point cloud processing and modelling software called PointStudio 8 – a new name, platform and ribbon interface evolving from I-Site Studio. The next generation 3D platform for modelling, analysis and reporting is delivered on the Maptek Workbench, which unlocks data sharing with other Maptek applications. One of the benefits of moving to the Workbench is access to the Workflow Editor for building interactive command sequences. PointStudio users can link workflow components to data and easily run automations in context. “A good example is site-configured registration workflows. This incorporates data import and filtering, as well as... (read more)

Earth Observation Big Data - The Hammer Mindset Lacks the Edge

An old adage tells us that if all we have is a hammer, we see every problem as a nail. So for bigger problems we get a bigger hammer... The European Sentinels generate more than 10TB of free scientific-grade imagery every day. Over the past few years I’ve heard about truly amazing new approaches to handling output at this scale. These have ranged from bigger storage and faster processors to better fibre and wholesale use of the Cloud. Sounds like Big Data needs a Big Hammer... right? So here’s a thought. Only a small proportion of commercial satellite data is... (read more)

Moving UXO Classification to the Cloud

Geosoft is partnering with Acorn Science and Innovation to create a cloud-based technology solution for unexploded ordnance (UXO) classification projects. The three-year project, funded by the US Department of Defense’s Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), will deliver a cloud prototype for classifying buried metal as either UXO or non-hazardous clutter based on the analysis of electromagnetic induction (EMI) data. UXO classification requires several players working in different locations, currently on personal computers. This includes field technicians, data processors, data analysts, government project managers and geophysicists, and regulators. Data collected using advanced electromagnetic (EM) sensors in the field are sent... (read more)
