Nearmap Unveils Streaming 3D Online Platform and AI Technology

Nearmap, an aerial imagery company, has launched a 3D product in a move that could potentially change the way industries such as urban planning, architecture, construction, government and councils view and shape cities across Australia and the USA. More than 400,000 km2 have already been covered. Nearmap 3D allows customers to stream and export 3D imagery on demand on a massive scale, through its proprietary MapBrowser web application. Additionally, because the imagery is updated frequently, businesses can work with the most current information to make better-informed decisions. Nearmap has developed AI technology that is turning millions of aerial images, captured over a... (read more)

Bringing BIM Alive - Autodesk User Conference 2016

Cadline’s Autodesk user conference took place in the heart of the City of London in June. Richard Groom reports that BIM was the hot topic this year. With the deadline passed for central government contracts worth over £50 million to be using BIM level 2, this year’s conference concentrated on helping delegates to get to grips with the nuts and bolts of BIM. BIM for Newbies For early birds, there was a pre-conference session on ‘BIM leadership’, which was aimed at anyone ‘new to BIM or confused about what they should be doing next’. There were a lot of us!... (read more)

Development of Spatial Grids and Structure of Spatial Data Models

A Reflection on Spatial Data in 2018
During the AGI’s Annual Conference, GeoCom2017, on 25 November 2017 at the Royal Geographic Society in London, I was asked about our journey so far toward a ‘smarter way of mapping the world’. I was also asked by the convenor, Rollo Home, about the challenges which face us in the fast changing climate and economy. The question: “Are there better ways to quantify, model and predict geospatial data, which are growing exponentially?” In the current context of Big (Geo) Data, in general, and Smart Cities, in particular, accurate positioning is increasingly important. In addition, while remote sensing and ground surveying... (read more)

The Importance of REST APIs for 5G Network Technology

The use of technology to communicate fulfils an innate human need to connect with loved ones across geographies. Since the first telephone was invented in 1877, the demand for communication has been ever-growing. 141 years on from this achievement, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a very dynamic and fast-moving field and one which is becoming more and more intertwined with the geospatial industry, with geospatial, telecommunications, and Big Data industries beginning to converge in a significant way. End users and businesses are constantly seeking more from the telecommunications industry and, interestingly enough, vice-versa. On the one hand, end users... (read more)

Geo-referencing and Visualising Retail Store Stock with Geospatial Technologies

When the Internet first became available to staff at the University of Aberdeen, we were soon approached by a small Internet provider in Aberdeen (Internet for Business (IFB)) to look into the concept of developing a more visually interactive experience for online shoppers than the standard list-type shop-front that existed then on the Web. The idea was to use early digital Ordnance Survey (OS) map data as an interface to allow shoppers to navigate street maps – as if walking along a street – to a shop-front – and then ‘walking’ into a higher resolution digital plan of the store... A Focus on Underground Utilities - NWG Innovation Festival 2018

When the Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) held their second Innovation Festival in July 2018, it was an event like no other. The festival’s aim was to turn the concept of a typical business conference on its head. By staging the festival in an open field, complete with marquees, teepees and casually dressed attendees, NWG were going back to the roots of why people generally attend a festival: to release themselves from the predictability and routine of everyday business life. In doing so, the festival aimed to encourage a diverse group of people to think differently about innovation, and to share... (read more)

IXmaps Helps Canada See Where their Data Travels Online

The launch of a powerful Internet Mapping tool means Canadians now have an easy way to track exactly where their data is traveling across the Internet. The tool at IXmaps.ca — IXmaps stands for Internet Exchange Mapping — is the brainchild of a team of researchers at the University of Toronto and York University, led by Professor Andrew Clement. The IXmaps tool has been greatly improved to make it more user-friendly and accessible to the public, with a grant from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority's (CIRA) Community Investment Program and financial support from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC). The launch of the tool comes... (read more)
