Geoinformation for Disaster Management Conference in Istanbul

The world has experienced several devastating disasters in this century, first an Earthquake of a very high magnitude and then Tsunami afterwards or heavy rainfalls followed by floods and landslides, which are more and more of a common occurrence. To address disaster management, geoinformation is needed. The Gi4DM2018 Conference, to be held in March 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey, is open to receive proposals for papers. Most of the potential to mitigate such a disaster in the future would have to be in the field of vulnerability reduction by adaptation, e.g. in urban planning and construction, based on risk and vulnerability... You understand the benefits digital mapping linked to databases of information can deliver. Some of you are even geospatial evangelists – constantly encouraging others and seeking new areas of human activity where our technology can bring benefit. Whilst only being a commentator in that latter category, I did promise readers in the last issue... (read more)

Buzzes and Fizzes - Esri User Conference 2014

A brilliant sunny day in London was a chance to recharge enthusiasm for GIS and learn about some startling new applications of the technology. On the wall of one of the reception rooms of the QEII conference centre is an immense wooden sculpture. Entitled ‘On the Island’, it is the work of Sir Edualdo Paolozzi, born in Scotland of Italian parents. Created in 1986, the work is a mass of geometrical shapes that, for our community, serve as an easy metaphor for what today’s 3D city GIS can achieve.
