Buzz and Balance - GEO Business 2018

This year’s GEO Business conference, held on 22-23 May in London’s Islington, was, according to Geomatics World editors Ian Dowman and Richard Groom, the biggest and best yet. The following is a summary of their report on the event which hosted 203 exhibitors from 25 countries, 100 exhibitor workshops, as well as many high profile speakers and seminars. It should provide a taste of the type of topics which were discussed during this excellent annual event. Digital Transformation Mark Enzer, Chief Technical Officer of Mott MacDonald, presented on the topic of digital transformation in economic infrastructure, with a particular focus... (read more)

How Modern Water Monitoring Systems Improve Flooding and Water Risks

Mitigation Doubles Systems Efficiency
Our climate is changing; in many parts of the world water levels are changing. Storms knock out power and cause more floods than ever, whether or not you live on a coastline or near a river. More effective water level monitoring and flood warning systems will mean less insurance claims and a reduced need for relief funding, saving everyone time and money. New technological developments make water monitoring systems cost a fraction (less than 50%) of what they did just a few years ago. Geospatial data is an important pillar. The ubiquity and proliferation of cost-effective Industrial IoT sensor hardware makes it... (read more)

Bentley Presents Synchro Software for FC Barcelona Stadium Project

Bentley Systems, a leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, has presented Synchro, a 4D construction modelling solution, at the Microsoft Inspire conference in Las Vegas. Synchro will be used as part of a mixed reality construction management solution for FC Barcelona’s Espai Barça sports stadium project which was featured during the Mixed Reality (MR) and the Cloud session at the conference. The session was led by Microsoft’s Nancy Li, who detailed how Synchro will be used for the renovation of the sports arena, which when completed will accommodate more than 100,000 fans. In conjunction with time-lapse... (read more)

Cadcorp Provides Workload Modelling Analysis for Surrey Fire & Rescue

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) are benefiting from using Cadcorp SIS Desktop and Workload Modeller for a range of GIS analyses. Cadcorp SIS is used to carry out various tasks including production of thematic maps, hotspot maps and a variety of routing calculations. Cadcorp Workload Modeller is used to analyse the impact that any resource changes have on operational performance. SFRS approached Cadcorp earlier this year to provide a third party quality assurance service on the data, methodology and results of modelling options for fire cover in Surrey. In order to complete this project, SFRS supplied Cadcorp with the... (read more)

Thai Soccer Team Rescue Assisted by Intermap

In partnership with Mappoint Asia Thailand Public Company, and Chiang Rai University, Intermap Technologies, a leading provider of geospatial intelligence solutions, supplied its newly-released NEXTMap One, a 1m resolution elevation dataset, to the Thai Department of National Parks in an effort to help rescue the trapped Thai soccer team. This high-resolution elevation data was supplied within three hours, and used in conjunction with other sensors to identify elevation coordinates, prioritise potential drilling points, identify drainage paths, provide a detailed and interactive 3D model of the area, and determine alternate routes into the caves to help rescue the boys. NEXTMap One,... (read more)

Bentley Acquires Synchro to Push 4D Technology

Bentley Systems has announced its acquisition of Synchro Software, in a move that will see the firm bring Synchro’s BIM time dimension modelling into their ProjectWise construction software suites. Bentley aims to introduce Synchro’s 4D construction modelling through the ProjectWise connected data environment (CDE) to provide change synchronisation functionality to keep discrete BIM processes aligned when managing construction projects. The software maker says that this capability can assure that BIM deliverables remain updated for ‘aligning the as-designed, as-constructed, and as-operated digital engineering models to improve both project performance and asset performance.’ “In construction modelling for industrial projects, the market is... 3D Repo Adds Instant Clash Detection to Online BIM Platform

Digital Construction technology provider 3D Repo has announced software that identifies clashes in construction plans by analysing 3D models submitted by project partners and contractors. The new Clash Detection functionality has been added to 3D Repo’s 3D Diff solution. Launched earlier this year, 3D Diff is the first web-based, real-time change detection software for 3D models used in Building Information Modelling (BIM). Another first for the sector, the enhanced 3D Diff solution with Clash Detection automatically identifies and highlights intersections, and therefore potential conflicts, between different types of models. From the starting point of the architect’s plans, a range of... (read more)
