Effective Use of Geospatial Big Data

Server Solutions Hold the Key
The heart of any geospatial analysis system, regardless of its location or configuration, is increasingly becoming the server. All systems face a similar challenge, whether the system is in the ‘cloud’, a secure data centre or on a single machine running in an office. This challenge is primarily the ability to deal with the ever-increasing quantities and variety of data the world now produces at an unprecedented rate. This article explains how, for mission-critical systems, purposely designed software is required that has been tested in the most demanding environments. Both commercial and government organisations recognise the enormous fiscal, operational and... (read more)

Australian Buildings Data Available Via API

PSMA Australia, provider of Australia’s authoritative location datasets, has released an Application Programming Interface (API) that will allow access to data about any building in Australia. The beta version of the Buildings API is based on the PSMA’s award-winning Geoscape dataset and is available for free via their developer portal. It contains data on over 8.8 million buildings with more to be added soon. PSMA’s CEO, Dan Paull, said the company has nearly mapped every building at every address in Australia and expects to have captured all buildings with a roof area greater than nine metres square by mid-2018. The... (read more)

Insights into GIS Data - GeoCom17

An impressive line-up of speakers climbed the stage of the Royal Geographical Society in London, UK, on Thursday 26 October for the AGI Annual Conference, GeoCom17. Professionals in the geospatial data industry gathered to hear the newest developments and learn about the offerings the industry could contribute. There also was time for honours as Rollo Home received the AGI Chairperson’s Award for Outstanding Service and Diana Murray was presented with the AGI Award for Career Achievement. The theme of the day was ‘Smart Geospatial’ and this was highlighted by Editor of Techworld Charlotte Jee who highlighted challenges that are existing... (read more)

Maptek Invests with PETRA Data Science

Maptek and PETRA Data Science have established a partnership which will enable seamless value chain optimization and simulation from resource models through to metal produced. Mining companies will be able, for the first time, to use millions of tonnes of their historical performance and resource metadata for dynamic optimization. “Whether you are looking at their 3D virtual environments for geological modelling and mine optimization, or long-range laser scanners for 3D mapping and monitoring, every aspect is custom built for mining. Any true digital twin in mining needs to consider geology,” said a PETRA spokesperson. “Our partnership with Maptek provides PETRA... (read more)

Esri Acquires ClearTerra Location Data Extraction Technology

Esri has announced it has acquired technology from ClearTerra, a creator of geospatial and activity-based intelligence tools. This acquisition will provide the ArcGIS platform users the ability to easily discover and extract geographic coordinates from unstructured textual data like emails, briefings and reports, instantly generating intelligent map-based information. This capability will make mapping this information easier across many industries. Defence, intelligence, and public safety organisations tend to have massive volumes of unstructured data, as do other fields such as petroleum, utilities, and maritime, where locating information on the earth is not as easy as searching for a street address. Esri’s acquisition... (read more)

Spatio-temporal Geography and Medical Data

Authors David R. Green and Jan O. Jansen demonstrate through examples how GIS can add explanatory value to the analysis of medical data. The analysis of spatial data often relies on the use of Geographical Information Systems, with maps being the usual output. However, increasingly, GIS functionality provides more than just a digital mapping toolbox: it can include spatial and network analysis, 3D visualisation, and modelling. GIS can also handle data from many disparate sources, including remote sensing and GPS or GNSS. The latter provides for the accurate capture of spatial locations and an array of attributes including ground-based photographic... (read more)
