Ordnance Survey Announces OS Open Zoomstack

Ordnance Survey (OS) has launched OS Open Zoomstack, a mapping product under a three month trial. The Zoomstack API is an easier and more accessible way of using OS data in an interactive map and has been designed with start-ups and SMEs in mind to help with building mobile and web applications. The OS data within it can be transferred as a single 2GB data file, meaning it can be used off-line or out in the field. OS Cartographic Design Consultant Charley Glynn said: “Zoomstack is a vector-based map which ranges from a national overview right down to street level... (read more)

Standard to Improve the Way Information Is Referenced to the Earth

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has approved the Discrete Global Grid System (DGGS) as OGC Abstract Specification - Topic 21 [OGC 15-104r5]. The goal of DGGS is to enable rapid assembly of spatial data without the difficulties of working with projected coordinate reference systems. The OGC DGGS Abstract Specification standard defines the conceptual model and a set of rules for building highly efficient architectures for spatial data storage, integration and analytics. DGGSs represent the Earth as hierarchical sequences of equal area tessellations on the surface of the Earth, each with global coverage and with progressively finer spatial resolution. Individual observations... (read more)

Pointfuse Point Cloud Software Transforms Design of Construction

Swanton Consulting has transformed the design of temporary works – such as façade and basement retention – using a software innovation that creates instant 3D models from laser scanner data. Processing of the millions of individual 3D laser scan measurements, known collectively as point clouds, used to take Swanton up to two weeks. However, since introducing Pointfuse V2 point cloud processing software, Swanton can now produce highly accurate vector models, suitable for immediate use by design engineers, in less than a day. Swanton Consulting specializes in the design of temporary works, deep basements, façade retentions, retaining walls, specialist structural elements... (read more)
