WebGIS Performance Tests

Distributed and Centralised Work Models
A WebGIS is usually constructed as a multi-tier architecture basically consisting of the client side, the server side and the database component. From the client side, users send queries or requests to the server via (wireless) internet. Next, the server communicates with the database, where the requested information is compiled by the database server. Finally, the result is sent to the client. With the rapid growth of WebGIS, a number of work models have been developed to increase efficiency and performance. While developing the Boston Water and Sewer WebGIS application in 2010, the authors tested the performance of two models:... (read more)

Civil Maps Releases Fingerprint Base Map for Autonomous Cars

Civil Maps’ Fingerprint Base Map, which was presented at CES 2018, has been released and offers a robust, scalable and precise solution for autonomous vehicle mapping and localisation that forms part of the company´s HD semantic map. The basemap can be updated in real-time and performs in challenging weather situations as well. Explaining the technology behind the product, the company compares it with the Shazam technology for recognising songs with your smartphone: An app grabs an audio snippet of a song, consults a database and when there´s a match, information about the song is passed to the user from the... Cadcorp Selected by Wealden District for Corporate GIS

Wealden District Council (WDC) has selected Cadcorp’s Software as a Service (SaaS) as their current GIS and spatial analysis systems had become unsupported and needed replacing. WDC considered that for future proofing, a central spatial repository with a GIS was their best option. The council required GIS software that was suitable for both the casual and professional user; supplemented with configurable web pages for a public facing mapping website. WDC approached Cadcorp via the G-Cloud framework on the Digital Marketplace and contracted for supply of a corporate GIS with fully hosted web mapping and spatial database server. This option incorporates... (read more)

How US States Tap into Map Technology to Manage Elections

More than two-thirds of states responded to a nationwide survey on elections data conducted in the first half of 2018. Responses were coordinated by state government representatives who focus on the development and deployment of mapping data and systems across state agencies and local governments. “An electoral system with integrity - enhanced by accurate, authoritative geographic data and presented clearly and transparently - has never been more important,” said NSGIC President Andy Rowan. “Geo-enabled elections overcome the four fundamental challenges with the existing address list approach to precinct management. In the address list approach, no actual boundaries are stored explicitly... (read more)

3D GIS in China

Chongqing Survey Institute Realised What Many Still Dream Of
Since 1998, the Chongqing Survey Institute (CSI) has been managing the 3D geoinformation database, including terrain, buildings, underground pipelines, geology and underground buildings, of the Chinese megapolis of 30 million people. For the commercial market, CSI’s 3D Mobile group focuses on combining the indoor and outdoor environment with e-commerce systems. Meanwhile, its BIM and GIS Integration group concentrates on three fields: geological survey, construction sector and municipal administration. Chongqing is a city of unique topographical and landscape features. It is built on mountains and partially surrounded by the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, making mapping the city a big challenge for... The Power of PostgreSQL and PostGIS - Interview with Paul Ramsey

In this article, we speak to Paul Ramsey about how both PostgreSQL and PostGIS can provide a solid foundation for any small to large organisational GIS architecture. Paul, a Solutions Engineer at Carto, has been working with geospatial software for over 15 years: consulting to government and industry; building a geospatial software company; and programming on open source software. He co-founded the PostGIS spatial database project in 2001 and is currently an active developer and member of the project steering committee. In 2008, Paul received the Sol Katz Award for achievement in open source geospatial software, and he speaks and... (read more)
